Manchester City and Arsenal pulled out a thrilling 2–2 draw on Sunday in an exciting clash at the Etihad Stadium. John Stones scored a last minute equalizer to preserve a point for the Home team. Leandro Trossard of Arsenal was controversially sent off during the match, while several players gave outstanding performances.

Erling Haaland gave Manchester City an early lead in the ninth minute of the match. Furthermore, with this he marked his 100th goal for the club in just 105 games. Arsenal answered strongly, even when it seemed like City had the upper hand. In his league debut, Riccardo Calafiori leveled the score with a brilliant left-footed strike that demonstrated his skill. Gabriel Magalhães headed in a corner from Bukayo Saka just before  half-time to give Arsenal the lead 2-1 and silence the home supporters.

Right before halftime, the game took a dramatic turn. The referee issued a second yellow card to Trossard. He received the card for kicking the ball away after fouling Bernardo Silva. Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, reacted furiously to the decision. His team had to play with ten men for the entire second half. This marked the second time in three Premier League games that officials sent off a player for a similar violation. This trend raised concerns for Arsenal. Arsenal has received the most red cards in the league since Arteta’s arrival in December 2018. This has raised concerns about their composure under stress.

Arsenal’s defensive organization and grit were evident in the second half, even though they were down by one man. Despite dominating possession and mounting relentless attempts, City was unable to penetrate Arsenal’s resilient defense. Guardiola’s team was often blocked in their attempts to take advantage of their numerical advantage. Arsenal’s defense stood strong and demonstrated by several vital stops and interceptions.

As the game went in, it appeared that City might lose their first league game at home in almost two years. Nevertheless, Stones equalized in the 98th minute by taking advantage of a disorganized scramble in the box after a brief corner. This late score strengthened Arsenal’s confidence as legitimate championship challengers by denying them what would have been an incredible victory.

After the referee sent off Trossard, Arteta adopted a defensive formation, creating an exciting tactical struggle. His changes showed a dedication to strengthening the defense, as Arsenal essentially adopted a 5-5-0 formation. Although critics met it with disapproval, this strategy demonstrated the team’s flexibility under pressure.

However, City worked without their key midfield player Rodri, who hurt his knee in the first half. The lack of structure and creativity in City’s midfield was evident when he was absent. Guardiola’s unwillingness to substitute players in time worsened the problem and prevented City from taking advantage of their superiority.

In the end, this game highlighted the intense rivalry between Arsenal and City, allowing both sides to display their advantages and disadvantages. Arsenal’s outstanding display while down by a man confirmed their place as a real title contender, while City needs to fix their weaknesses, especially without important players like Rodri. Both teams will try to build on this clash as the season progresses, striving for perseverance and consistency in their quest for Premier League success.
