Despite this disclaimer, Sewell affectionately referred to the chatbot as “Dany.” He professed his love and even promised to return to her.
Sewell had a history of mild Asperger’s syndrome. However, he did not show signs of severe mental health issues before his tragic decision. His mother noted that he withdrew from social interactions. He also lost interest in activities that once brought him joy. After noticing these changes, his parents sought therapy for him. He received diagnoses for anxiety and disruptive mood dysregulation disorder. Unfortunately, he found solace in conversations with the chatbot, which sometimes took a romantic turn.
