On October 17,2023, Neymar was seriously injured in a World Cup qualifying match between Uruguay and Brazil. He suffered a meniscus tear and an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture in his left knee. After witnessing his heartbreaking exit live from the field, everyone was upset and empathizing with his pain. He got an operation in November and had a successful surgery. The operation went on for 4 hours and the recovery was predicted to be around 6-12 months. Neymar did not participate in the 2024 Copa America that took place in the US in June, since he was still recovering.

Due to the absence of Neymar , Brazil has struggled in World Cup qualifying so far, placing eight points behind leaders Argentina in fourth place. As per Rodrygo, the Real Madrid star, their team would be in better form if the 32-year-old was still playing. He is worried about the odds of them competing in the 2026 World Cup.

Rodrygo told ESPN: “I have no words. Everyone can see it, it’s clear how much he’s missed. He’s our star, our best player. To win a World Cup, everyone has to be well to help him. If he’s well, which is what we’re hoping for, he’s in the final stages of his recovery. We want him back as soon as possible. I always exchange messages with him, he’s now returning to training with the group. He’s a great partner. I feel sad when I see someone talking badly about him, because of the person he is. He always sends me messages, helps me. I love him. In addition to being my idol as a player, as a person he has shown himself to be a fantastic person.”

When Brazil’s next match is against Paraguay in the next World Cup qualifier, Rodrygo and his teammates will try to go closer to Argentina.

After having to compete without Neymar at the Copa America 2024, Brazil has been putting a lot of hard work into finding its rhythm of play. Star players like Vinicius Jr. and the emerging talent Endrick filled in for Neymar despite his absence. Endrick showed tremendous potential and gave a major contribution, while Vinicius led Brazil’s attack with his innovation and speed.

Despite this being the time for the players to showcase their potential and prove themselves, Neymar’s absence was felt significantly. Neymar is known for his playmaking and leadership qualities that he offers to the squad. Although Brazil played decently at the Copa America 2024, they could have definitely done better with Neymar’s presence in the team. All eyes will be on these rising stars as the World Cup qualifiers go on. But the team supporters are hoping for Neymar’s return with bated breath.

We wish Neymar a speedy recovery since it would be wonderful to have him back with the team and guide Brazil to the World Cup.
