The Neymar Al-Hilal Transfer: Football’s Big Disappointment?

Neymar’s career has taken a disappointing turn, and his future at Al-Hilal is now uncertain. Just a few years ago, Neymar seemed on the verge of greatness. After surpassing Ronaldo Nazario to become Brazil’s all-time top scorer, he received high praise for his skills and potential. Ronaldo called him a “complete and increasingly mature player,” encouraging him to trust his instincts and pursue more records. At that time, Neymar’s trajectory appeared limitless.

However, Neymar’s path took a sudden downturn in recent years. His time at Paris Saint-Germain was plagued by injuries, which overshadowed his performances. When Al-Hilal offered €90 million for him in the summer of 2023, PSG quickly accepted. Despite breaking records for Brazil, Neymar’s performance started to falter. In September 2023, he surpassed Pele’s record, but soon after, he tore his ACL while playing for his country. The injury was severe, and Neymar struggled with the long recovery process, at one point considering quitting football altogether.

Although Neymar eventually made his return, it lasted only two games before another injury struck. Al-Hilal, who had invested heavily in him, now faces the possibility of losing their investment. Neymar had received an extraordinary welcome, including a €160 million contract and luxurious accommodations. The club even held an extravagant ceremony to mark his arrival, but his performances have not lived up to the high expectations.

Neymar’s debut was delayed due to an ankle injury, and upon his return, he showed some promise with assists in his first game. However, he continued to struggle with fitness, missing several chances. Tensions reportedly arose between Neymar and coach Jorge Jesus, and rumors of a return to Santos began circulating. Despite a brief glimpse of his potential in a match against Al-Shabab, Neymar’s form remained inconsistent.

His first goal came months later in an AFC Champions League match, but it did not signal a lasting comeback. After a World Cup qualifying match with Brazil, Neymar suffered another serious injury and required surgery. His recovery took months, sidelining him for most of the 2024 season.

Neymar’s latest setback—a hamstring injury—has raised further doubts about his ability to contribute at a high level. Al-Hilal is now considering terminating his contract, as his recurring injuries have become a financial burden. Experts believe Neymar’s body is too fragile for top-level football. If Al-Hilal terminates his contract, they will likely remember Neymar’s time as one of the costliest mistakes in recent football history. Neymar, once regarded as one of the best players of his generation, now faces a premature decline, leaving his future uncertain.
